Accessibility statement plugins for WordPress, compared

Short answer: most popular WordPress accessibility plugins are either overlays/widgets (Ally, UserWay, OneTap) or checkers (Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker), and few write an accessibility statement. For a statement you can use a plugin built for it, such as our Plainramp (coming soon), or a free template: the GOV.UK sample statement for UK public bodies, or the W3C accessibility statement generator for anyone. Overlays do not make a site accessible, and regulators have acted against overlay compliance claims (the US FTC's 2025 order against accessiBe).

What a good statement includes

  • The standard you aim for (usually WCAG 2.2 AA) and your conformance status.
  • Known issues, and what you are doing about them.
  • How to contact you about accessibility, and how quickly you reply.
  • The enforcement procedure where one applies (for UK public bodies: EHRC/EASS, or the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland).
  • When the statement was prepared and last reviewed, and how you tested.

An example: our own accessibility statement.

How to choose

  • You need a statement: a statement generator or a template; checkers and overlays do not write one.
  • You need to find issues while editing: Equalize Digital's checker is well rated.
  • Your theme has common gaps (skip links, focus styles): WP Accessibility fixes several.
  • Avoid relying on overlays for compliance claims.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an accessibility statement?

UK public sector websites must publish one. Services covered by the European Accessibility Act must describe how they meet the accessibility requirements, and a statement is the usual way. For other sites it is good practice.

Do accessibility overlays make a site compliant?

No. Overlays can change how a page looks, but they do not fix the underlying code, and regulators have acted against vendors' compliance claims.
