Google Chat and Jira integrations compared

Short answer: to get Jira Cloud notifications into Google Chat you need a Marketplace app or an automation rule. Google's own free Google Chat for Jira Cloud app has the most installs (10,985) but a 2.3★ rating and no release since November 2021. Advanced Google Chat for Jira (Move Work Forward) is free and maintained (release 4.6.0 on 26 October 2026). Paid options include Canary Apps' Google Chat for Jira and Jigo. Without an app, Jira Automation's "Send web request" action can post to a Google Chat webhook. Our ThreadCast (not yet listed) focuses on one thread per issue.

No-app option: Jira Automation + webhook

  1. In Google Chat: space → Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhook; copy the URL.
  2. In Jira: Project settings → Automation → create a rule (for example "Issue transitioned") with the action Send web request, method POST, to the webhook URL.
  3. Body (custom data): {"text": "{{issue.key}} {{issue.summary}} moved to {{issue.status.name}}"}

This is free within your Automation limits, but each rule is one event, messages are plain text, and there is no threading by issue, retries or delivery log unless you build them.

Which to choose

  • Free and maintained today: Advanced Google Chat for Jira.
  • Whole Google Workspace integration: Jigo.
  • A couple of simple alerts: Jira Automation with a webhook.
  • Threaded, filtered notifications with a delivery log: Chat Relay now, or ThreadCast when it is listed.

Requirements for every webhook-based option: Google Workspace with incoming webhooks allowed by your admin; personal Gmail accounts cannot create webhooks. Details of ours: ThreadCast.

Disclosure: Tidewell Software makes ThreadCast. We list it alongside the alternatives, in no ranked order, and say where another option is the better fit. Figures are the platforms' own public numbers, checked on 8 November 2026. Corrections are welcome by email.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Google Chat integration for Jira?

Yes: Google's own Google Chat for Jira Cloud app (last released in 2021) and Move Work Forward's Advanced Google Chat for Jira are free. Jira Automation with a webhook is another free route.

Can Jira post to Google Chat without an app?

Yes. A Jira Automation rule with a Send web request action can POST JSON to a Google Chat incoming webhook. You lose threading, retries and a delivery log.
