Markreef: Markdown, Mermaid diagrams and code for Confluence

Coming soonFree to 10 users (planned)Runs on Atlassian

Markreef is a Confluence Cloud app that lets you write GitHub-flavoured Markdown (tables, task lists, footnotes), Mermaid diagrams and syntax-highlighted code in one macro, with a live side-by-side preview. It runs entirely on Atlassian Forge: no external servers, no sign-in, nothing leaves your site, and PDF and Word exports keep the content. It is not yet on the Atlassian Marketplace.

Who it is for

Engineering, platform and SRE teams who keep READMEs, runbooks and architecture decision records in Markdown and want them in Confluence without rewriting, and anyone who wants diagrams-as-code in Confluence with a single app instead of two.

What it does

  • Paste the README, runbook or ADR you already have; tables, task lists, footnotes and fenced code render the way GitHub shows them.
  • Write Mermaid in the same macro, with "Insert example" for each diagram type.
  • See the result as you type in a side-by-side editor.
  • Export pages to PDF and Word with headings, lists, tables and code intact.

Quick start

  1. On a Confluence page, type /markreef (or find "Markreef" in the macro browser).
  2. Write or paste Markdown on the left and watch the preview on the right. Use "Insert example" for diagrams, tables, task lists or code.
  3. Choose a theme (Auto, Light or Dark), line numbers, copy button and diagram export, then click Save.

Example macro content:

## Deploy runbook

- [x] Tag the release
- [ ] Run the migration

```mermaid
sequenceDiagram
  Dev->>CI: push tag
  CI->>Prod: deploy
  Prod-->>Dev: health check OK
```

```bash
kubectl rollout status deploy/api
```

Frequently asked questions

How do I add Markdown to a Confluence Cloud page?

With Markreef, type /markreef on a page (or find it in the macro browser), paste or write Markdown on the left and watch the preview on the right, then save.

Which Mermaid diagrams are supported?

Flowchart, sequence, Gantt, class, ER, state, pie, mind map, git graph and more, using Mermaid 12 in strict security mode. A syntax error shows a readable error box and the rest of the page still renders.

Does it work in dark mode?

Yes. Diagrams follow Confluence's theme automatically, or you can pin light or dark.

Can I export diagrams?

Yes, as SVG or as a 2x PNG. PDF and Word page exports carry headings, lists, tables, links and code; diagrams export as their Mermaid source.

Does any data leave my Confluence site?

No. Markreef requests no product scopes, stores nothing and makes no external requests. All libraries are bundled. Images hosted outside Atlassian are shown as a link instead of loaded.

Which code languages are highlighted?

About 60 via highlight.js, including JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust, SQL, Bash, PowerShell, YAML, JSON, Dockerfile, Kotlin, Swift, C#, C++, PHP and Ruby.

What happens without a subscription?

Markdown and code keep rendering. Mermaid diagrams then show as highlighted source, and export is off.
